How many of you out there actually pay attention to the sky when you are driving, let alone any planes overhead? Well, maybe you don’t if you live way out in the country where that is just not an everyday occurrence. I have lived in Houston for 12+ years now, but I still get excited every single time I see the NASA T-38s (flown by astronauts in training) streaking through the morning skies. Most days, the people of Clear Lake can expect to see at least 2 jets out for their daily training missions roaring through the clouds and their sleek bodies glistening in the morning sun. On a recent morning, some of the NASA employees, who routinely work out together, gathered for a special workout to launch the LES MILLS GRIT 21 Cardio. But… a special launch needs an equally special launch place, right? That is exactly what the fitness trainers at NASA thought as well.
The group gathered at 6am in the dark, very hot and humid Houston morning at Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base to workout mere feet from those elite NASA T-38s. Against a backdrop of those beautiful, sleek masters of the sky, the group worked out for almost an hour to high energy music and a tough line up of moves. The work out session, led by NASA employees and fitness instructors Luca Callini, Carissa Callini, Kimberly Konkel and Leslie Kriewaldt, was perfectly matched against the high octane planes parked throughout the hanger. As the sun came up outside, I took the group onto the flight line for a few memorable photos of them in front of the T-38s awaiting their next flight. We lucked out with a glorious sunrise, the amazing aircraft and the promise of a great day in this country that we love.
