“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller
Hey moms… life is pretty hectic as it is, then you throw in senior year for your son and the world just turns upside down. There is also that struggle… so close a man, but yet still your child. Top that off with the fact that most boys (and let’s face it men also) do not want to sit for any photographic experience, unless of course they are throwing that 50 yard touchdown with 5 seconds left on the clock. But, there are ways to reach a compromise between mother and son, so never fear.
Step 1 – negotiate! I have, on more than one occasion, represented the interests of the mother. Mom wants portraits of her “baby”. Son wants “coolness”. I always state that the portraits will be what the mom has to hold on to when son leaves. To the son, I say “she gave birth to you, so humor her for one hour.”
Step 2 – Always take at least one portrait in a suit, sports coat or button down with khaki pants. You may not like it now, but your mom will and eventually you will as well.
Step 3 – This one is easy – if you play sports, get one on the field of whatever sport you play.
Step 4 – Do you have any hobbies? hiking, grew up on a farm, biking, dirt bike riding, surfing… you get the picture. Pick something that says something about you at this time in your life.
Step 5 – Do you have a favorite spot in town? Shoot there if possible.
The biggest secret is to have fun! Enjoy the day with each other because time is short and graduation is just around the corner.
